Innovation Showcase

The Innovation Showcase is organized as part of the ICTinspire: Student Innovation and Research Symposium to provide undergraduate and postgraduate students with an opportunity to present and demonstrate innovative IoT-based solutions to real-world problems. The selected students are encouraged to participate individually or as teams and showcase their working prototypes, applications, and innovative ideas to academics, industry professionals, fellow students, and other participants.

Important Dates

Project Requirements

To be eligible for the Innovation Showcase, the project should meet the following requirements:

  • The project must demonstrate a clear IoT-based solution to a real-world problem.
  • Each project should include at least:
    • One or more sensors or input devices;
    • A processing unit or controller; and
    • An output or response mechanism.
  • The project may incorporate communication or networking technologies to enable
    data transmission, remote monitoring, or control, where applicable.
  • Students may use platforms such as Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi, NodeMCU, or
    other similar IoT platforms.
  • The project should demonstrate actual working functionality during the showcase.
  • The project should be developed and demonstrated by the participating
    student(s).

Participation Guidelines

  • Undergraduate and postgraduate students are eligible to participate.
  • Students may participate individually or as a team.
  • For team projects, a maximum of five students per team is recommended.
  • Individual projects will be evaluated using the same evaluation criteria as team
    projects.
  • Each team member should have a clearly identifiable contribution to the project.
  • Students are responsible for developing, preparing, and demonstrating their own
    projects.

Project Submission Guidelines

Students interested in participating in the Innovation Showcase should submit the following:

Project Proposal

Submit a maximum of three-page project proposal describing the proposed IoT solution.
The proposal should include:

  • Project title
  • Names of participating students and affiliations
  • Background/problem statement
  • Objectives of the project
  • Proposed IoT solution
  • Key components and technologies used
  • Brief description of the system/architecture
  • Expected outcome and real-world application

Video Demonstration

A short video demonstrating the working prototype should be submitted along with the
proposal.
The video should clearly demonstrate the functionality of the proposed IoT solution.

Evaluation and Selection

  • All submitted proposals and demonstration videos will be reviewed by the
    Evaluation Panel.
  • Projects will be evaluated based on factors such as innovation, relevance to a real
    world problem, technical implementation, functionality, and potential impact.
  • Selected teams will be notified of their acceptance and provided with further
    information regarding the showcase.

Requirements for the Live Demonstration

Accepted projects must be prepared for a live demonstration during the symposium.
Students should:

  • Ensure that the project is fully functional and ready for demonstration before the allocated showcase time.
  • Bring all necessary hardware, sensors, cables, power supplies, laptops, software, and other equipment required for the demonstration.
  • Clearly demonstrate the complete IoT workflow, including:
  • Explain the purpose and functionality of the major components used in the project.
  • Be prepared to explain how the proposed solution addresses the identified real world problem.
  • Have a backup plan in case of Internet connectivity, power, software, or hardware
    failure.
  • Ensure that all electrical and electronic components are handled and operated safely.
  • Ensure that the demonstration area is kept organized and that all equipment is safely arranged.

Showcase Presentation

During the showcase, participants should be able to:

  • Briefly introduce the problem and motivation.
  • Explain the proposed IoT solution.
  • Demonstrate the working prototype.
  • Explain the technologies and components used.
  • Highlight the innovation and practical value of the solution.
  • Respond to questions from the evaluation panel and visitors.

Important Notes

Only projects that satisfy the eligibility requirements and are accepted by the Evaluation Panel will be permitted to participate in the live showcase.

  • Participants are responsible for transporting, setting up, operating, and safely managing their own equipment.
  • Participants should report to the showcase venue and complete their setup before the allocated demonstration time.
  • Any project involving electrical, electronic, mechanical, or other potentially hazardous components must be operated with appropriate safety precautions.
  • The organizing committee reserves the right to request modifications to a demonstration if safety or operational concerns arise.
